Somewhere Between War and Peace

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer James Hill of the New York Times chooses fifty of his photographs and describes the stories and emotions behind those pictures and the artistic and emotional choices shaped during the intense kaleidoscope of those experiences. From the invasion of Iraq in 2003, to the Royal Wedding in 2011, to taking the first portrait of the notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout, to the death of Pope John Paul II, Hill has witnessed some of recent history's most poignant moments, and describes the fine balance demanded of a photojournalist between professional detachment and personal engagement.

James Hill is a contract photographer for The New York Times and has covered international news and events in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and Africa since 1991.
His work has won some of photojournalism’s leading prizes including World Press Photo, the Pulitzer Prize, Visa d’Or pour l’Image and awards from the Overseas Press Club of America and the National Press Photographer’s Association of America.
Since 2003 he has returned to live in Moscow with his family, from where he continues to travel the world for the New York Times and international news magazines and other clients.
