In engineering when a product is designed it consists of a number of parts and theseparts mate with each other in some form. In the assembly it is important to consider thetype of mating or fit between two parts which will actually define the Way the parts are tobehave during the working of the assembly. Take for example a shaft and hole, which willhave to fit together. In the simplest case if the dimension.of the shaft is lower than the di-mension of. the hole, then there will be cleara,nce. Such a fit is termed clearancefit. Alternatively, if the dimension of the shaft is more than that of the hole, then it istermed interference fit.
Dimensions given, close tolerances means that the part must fit properly with someother parts. Both must be given tolerances in keeping with the allowance desired, the man-ufacturing processes available, and the minimum, COSt of production and assembly that willmaximize profit. Generally speaking, the cost Of a part goes up as the tolerance is de-creased. If a part has several or more surfaces to be machined, the cost can be excessivewhen little deviation is allowed from the nomirial size.
