商品簡介
O'Flanagan (geography, University College, Cork, Ireland) gives a fascinating in-depth study of the Atlantic port cities of Portugal and Spain in the early modern period. He sets the stage by examining the literature on port cities in general before concentrating on Iberian ones. The cities are studied individually in terms of what was traded, the make up of the population, the role of the merchants within the structure of the city, among many other points. The relationship between the port cities and the surrounding countryside is also investigated. O'Flanagan follows the fortunes of these cities until 1900, noting how world affairs and changes in taste affected them. His methods could be used to provide similar studies of cities in other regions. By taking into account a multitude of factors in the life of the cities, O'Flanagan presents a multi-faceted image that will be of interest to scholars in many fields.
