商品簡介
Although perhaps not as well remembered as other Civil War figures, David S. Stanley gave 40 years of well-regarded service to the US army. This volume provides an extensive look at the progression of his career, with specific chapters focusing on his roles in the Civil War's Siege of Corinth, Battle of Iuka, the later Battle of Corinth, and the Battle of Stones River. It also covers his time in the Atlanta Campaign, and the closing battles of Spring Hill and Franklin. Yet the book doesn't shy away from looking at his troublesome relations to both alcohol and other prominent figures, such as William T. Sherman. Other personal issues receive coverage as well, including his conversion to Catholicism. A concluding chapter provides a summary of Stanley's military career and his family legacy, including 11 individuals who attended the United States Military Academy. The index is made up almost exclusively of people and organizations. In preparing this work Belcher relied on extensive research in the Special Collections and Archives Department at West Point along with four other archives, regimental histories written by soldiers, and other biographies and autobiographies.
