Examining recent US-Russian relations, Ambrosio (political science, North Dakota State U.) argues that seeming vacillations in Russian foreign policy--between "bandwagoning" and "balancing" vis-a-vis US power--in the post-Cold War era in fact betray a deep consistency that is based in Russia's self- identity as a great power, although that self-identity is tempered by its persistent weakness relative to the US. In the study, he emphasizes that the case-specific discussion of Russia's choices of bandwagoning and balancing demonstrates the need for the field of international relations to take the costs of bandwagoning into account when considering the balance/bandwagon dichotomy and to recognize that those costs include such non-material or positional goods as prestige, status, and influence.
