Rather than starting with the Spice Girls, who brought tween marketing to the mainstream, Coulter begins in the late 1980s to show how young girls were discovered as a separate marketing demographic, distinct from children and teenagers. She looks at how this discovery eventually led to these girls being labeled "tween consumers" by investigating how marketers, retailers, and subsequently the media industries heralded this tween girl as one of capitalism's most valuable customers. They should have been ignored, she says, because of their small number lodged between the Baby Boom and its children. She asks why they were not.
