Six reference appendices are included on units and symbols, terms, sources of information and standards, and conversion factors. In an effort to make the book useful for a wider audience, this fourth edition contains chapter exercises and answers. Many of the exercises have been designed to force the student to search for information or data not in the chapter containing those exercises but elsewhere in the book. To create a "leaner, meaner" text, long-winded historical discussions and redundancies have been excluded from this edition.
