Text and Controversy from Wyclif to Bale ― Essays in Honour of Anne Hudson

European and North American medievalists honor their Oxford University colleague Hudson with 20 essays arranged roughly to parallel the chapter divisions in her 1988 The Premature Reformation. They cover the question of sources; English religious figure and Bible translator John Wycliffe's (d. 1384) influence and reputation; controversies and reform in scholarship and education, theology, and politics; and contexts of vernacular Wycliffism. Among specific topics are the compilations of two late medieval devotional manuscripts, Wyclif at Syon in the 15th century, the alpha and omega of the Middle English Bible, the audience and framers of the Twelve Conclusions of the Lollards, and determining heresy in Middle English texts.
