In this first volume, he covers the five types of Holy Land liturgy that emerged after the loss of Jerusalem in 1187 that comprised the outer circle rites, designed to recruit crusaders, garner support for the crusade, and sustain the cause of Latin Jerusalem in general. He includes 12 color reproductions. A second volume will consider the inner circle of war rites proper, both for individual crusaders and for the Kingdom of Jerusalem in particular.
