商品簡介
This volume is from the National Research Council's Committee on Mycoherbicides for Eradicating Illicit Drug Crops, which was established by the US Congress and the Office of National Drug Control Policy to study the feasibility of developing naturally occurring strains of mycoherbicides against illicit cannabis, coca, and opium poppy crops and evaluate the potential health, ecological, and environmental risks of their use and the future research and development needed. The committee gathered information from government agencies, researchers, and the general public to address their effectiveness in eradicating target plants; the feasibility of their large-scale industrial manufacture and delivery; their potential spread and persistence in the environment; their pathogenicity and toxicity to nontarget organisms, including other plants, fungi, animals, and humans; and their potential for mutation and resulting effects on target plants and nontarget microorganisms. The report provides background on the biological control of undesirable plant species, including general principles learned from developing mycoherbicides and how they might be applied, issues like pesticide regulation in the US, international considerations for testing mycoherbicides, and a conceptual approach to evaluating risks; the biology and cultivation of cannabis, coca, and the opium poppy; the data on the Fusarium mycoherbicides and C. papveracea B. papveris and what is known about F. oxysporum in general ; and answers to each of the committee's goals, concluding that the available data is insufficient to determine the effectiveness and potential residual effects.
