Kuzniar (German and comparative literature, U. of North Carolina) hopes to demonstrate in this work how pervasively queer German cinema from the Weimar period to the present represented unconventional sexualities as allegorical, ornate, and enigmatic. Beginning in 1919 with the educational film Anders als die Andern ( Different from the Rest ), she looks at the works of Nazi movie star Zarah Leander in the films of Rainer Fassbinder, the queering of nationality in the films of Monika Treut and Rosa von Praunheim, the fetishistic medium of experimental filmmaking in the works of Michael Brynntrup and Matthias Mnller, and the androgynous appeal of "dyke noir" animation.
