Quinn, a US diplomat posted to Cameroon for many years, describes the society of the Beti in Central Cameroon and the changes it experienced primarily during the first half of the 20th century. He looks at four periods: the 1880s when the Beti were one of several tribes in the interior whose politics were unaffected by European contact, the German period 1887-1916, the French administration 1916-60, and the early days of independence.
