Classical mechanics as a theoretical discipline possesses an inherent beauty, depth, and richness that far transcend its immediate application in mechanical systems, says Lam, important though those applications are. He seeks to contribute to the rehabilitation of classical mechanics in the physics curriculum with a textbook that balances the physical and intuitive aspects with the mathematical aspects. There is enough material for a year-long course, but shorter courses could be carved out of it. Students should have completed a solid lower-division course in classical mechanics and have a good working knowledge of multivariable calculus, vector calculus, some linear algebra, some complex variable theory, elements of ordinary and partial differential equations, and introductory tensor analysis.
