Touching upon 20 academic disciplines, Churchman (chairman of the Behavioral Science Graduate Program at California State U.) surveys 100 theoretical explanations for human conflict and considers how their worth can be judged according to criteria of empiricism, logic, falsifiability, parsimony, generalizability, and usability. The volume proceeds through seven levels of conflict: individual, interpersonal, small group and community, organizational (primarily business), political within government structures, intellectual, and interstate conflict (encompassing strategic geography, diplomacy, and war).
