National Character ― A Psycho-social Perspective

Drawing together the author's previously published papers (from 1949 to 1993), this volume explores the concept of national character from a psycho-social perspective. It discusses the literature on national character produced after World War II and outlines a model emphasizing the personalities of individuals who make up a society. It applies the model to national character in Germany, Russia, and the US, then discusses relevant sociopolitical and socioeconomic aspects, such as social change, political systems and the democratic character, and rising expectations in the American public, and comparisons of character in different countries in terms of personal development, industrialization, modernization, and the quality of life.
