Women and the City, Women in the City ― A Gendered Perspective to Ottoman Urban History

This text provides a variety of subjects and issues of gender in urban Ottoman history and contemporary society, focusing on women with regards to politics, housing, clothing, religion, modes of survival, beauty, mobility and freedom, and employment. This book seeks to examine the role of women in the molding of contemporary Ottoman society, thereby reinforcing their legitimacy as primary forces in it. It contains seven essays in three parts by contributors exploring the “reorganization” of urban life, the gendered order of the city, discourses and narratives of gender in the urban context.
