Salzberg examines the relationship between contemporary audiences and the female film stars of Studio-Era Hollywood. She looks at the impulse among many fans to possess a direct material connection to an actress, and what the impulse says about the connection between on-screen icon and off screen reality, and she focuses this inquiry on the resonance produced by the artifacts of several Hollywood stars, including Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, and Ava Gardner. Ana Salzberg is a lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Dundee. She received her PhD in Film Studies from the University of Edinburgh, and has published on pre-Production Code cinema, Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and stars including Rita Hayworth and Grace Kelly.
