Simmons (U. of Nevada-Las Vegas) and his colleagues report on the archaeological excavations they undertook at Akrotiri Aetokremnos, on the south coast of the eastern Mediterranean island. Though the site is small and the only one of its kind found so far, the evidence strongly suggests that the island was inhabited 1,500 to 2,000 years earlier than the previously known neolithic sites show. They also suggest that, unlike elsewhere in the world, humans played a role in Pleistocene extinctions, particularly of the cute little pygmy hippopotamus and pygmy elephant. Annotation c.
