Secretum Secretorum was purported to be an extended letter of advice sent by Aristotle to Alexander the Great while he was campaigning in Persia. The title and the two famous names made the work irresistible for medieval readers, says Williams in his 1991 doctoral dissertation (no institution noted). After describing the contents and form, he traces its journey from its introduction into the west in the 12th century through its translation from Arabic to Latin, and its spread to become one of the most popular books of medieval Europe. Only names are indexed. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
