Freeth is a full-time psychiatrist and qualified counselor based in the Gloucerstershire area of England. She explores the philosophy, theory and practice of the person-centered approach as formulated by Carl Rogers (1902-1987), in the context of both contemporary psychiatry and mental health services provided by the UK's National Health Service (NHS). The author considers both how the person-centered approach can challenge psychiatry and how mental health services and the NHS present challenges and tensions to person-centered practitioners working in them; her hope is to assist greater understanding and to encourage the incorporation of the person-centered approach within psychiatry and mental health settings. For all mental health professionals, including those in training; members of the person-centered community, such as therapists, supervisors, and trainers; health and social care policymakers; and patient advocacy groups.
