Joseph Holbrooke: Composer, Critic, and Musical Patriot focuses on the musical and literary life of the composer. Opening with a biographical overview of Holbrooke that concentrates on his relationship with Granville Bantock and Wales and the role that Lord Howard de Walden played in Holbrooke’s work and development, contributors then offer studies of a selection of repertory by Holbrooke, including his chamber music, the chamber operas Pierrot and Pierrette and The Enchanted Garden, and his tone poem “The Raven.” The final chapter discusses Holbrooke’s nationalist ideology through a close examination and analysis of his book Contemporary British Composers, that was published in 1925. Included as well is an appendix of the complete works of Holbrooke, providing the first comprehensive and corrected list of Holbrooke’s compositions.
作者簡介
Dr Paul Watt is a lecturer in musicology in the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University. With Patrick Spedding he is co-editor of Bawdy Songbooks of the Romantic Period (2011) and is the author of articles in such journals as the RMA Research Chronicle, Music & Letters, and 19th-Century Music Review. He is currently writing a critical biography of Ernest Newman and a history of music criticism in late nineteenth-century England.
Anne-Marie Forbes is a senior lecturer in musicology at the Conservatorium of Music, University of Tasmania. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on aspects of British and Australian music of the early twentieth century in such journals as Music Review and Musicology Australia and has also published three major editions of the choral music and songs of the English composer, Fritz Hart, who made a major contribution to Australian musical life before World War II. Anne-Marie was the invited contributor of the articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians on Fritz Hart and Joseph Holbrooke.
