Permanent site-specific artworks were erected in the 1970s both in urban sites and in remote desert locations in the southwestern United States, with the support of the Dia Art Foundation. The American desert underwent considerable change and development, gradually becoming home to scientific research centers, military installations, and nuclear testing sites, as well as a hub of artistic activity. The book focuses on the sociopolitical significance of the site-specific art in which this multifunctional space is an essential element. The physical and social context endows the works with added values, turning them into visual signs of an alternative space. The new space they have created may well be dubbed a “differential space,” as defined by Henri Lefebvre. They serve as a form of reparation, whereby the concrete object is used to achieve repression through enchantment.
Mira Banay has an MA in art history from Tel Aviv University and PhD in art and visual history from Humboldt University in Berlin. She is the author of the textbook The Gesamtkunstwerk: Idea and Its Manifestation in Artworks through the 19th and 20th Centuries, and serves as teaching coordinator and head of two art history courses at the Open University, Israel.
