Metaphor and Metonomy Across Time and Cultures ─ Perspectives on the Sociohistorical Linguistics of Figurative Language

Working within the recently developed Conceptual Metaphor Theory, linguists explore figurative speech within the realm of everyday language and within people's ordinary conceptual system. They cover diachronic metaphor research, conceptual variation and change, figuration and grammaticalization, and figurative language in culture variation. Among specific topics are the sense development of borrowed metaphor in translation, charting the cognitive innovations of "fingers" and "claws" in Basque, the pivotal role of metaphor in the evolution of human language, two counter-expectation markers in Chinese, shaping shame in Old English and Old Norse texts, and a diachronic approach to cognitive patterns in Greek poetry metaphors.
