This volume recounts the Bataan Death March during World War II, in which American and Filipino prisoners were forced by the Japanese to march 65 miles from Mariveles and Bagac to Camp O'Donnell, Capas, in the Philippines after the surrender of General Edward King. The author considers who the American soldiers and Japanese captors were, who the Filipino civilians were and whether they were really sympathetic to the Americans, how each group's circumstances defined its behavior, and the violence that occurred on the march, reconsidering prevailing assumptions.
