Those living in Britain or planning to move there would do well to consult this atlas first. Shaw (social medicine, University of Bristol), Thomas (geography, University of Sheffield) and others have compiled a series of maps showing the causes of death throughout Britain. Each cause, from illness, "transport" accidents or suicide, is given its own page and multi-colored map along with an analysis of why certain areas seem to be hot spots for that particular fatal condition. Charts also divide the cause by sex, if applicable, and age. The general reader will be intrigued or alarmed by the statistics; clearly no one between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five should be allowed to drive.
