From 1211 until 1669, recounts McKee (history, U. of California-Davis), the island of Crete was Candia, a colony of Venice. She explores how the original ethnic groups Latin and Greek blurred over the generations, yet the ideology of ethnic purity remained long after any clear demarcation between the two predominant communities. She finds the concept of ethnic identity to have been largely determined by gender, religion, and social status, especially among the elites in each group.
