Transportation researchers and practitioners, and public authorities have been participating in STELLA, a three-year project to investigate the sustainability of existing and emerging patterns of mobility behavior in Europe and North America. The third of five focus groups has been examining the dynamics between society, behavior, and private/public transport, and the 12 papers here are from presentations at the group's meetings in Bonn in April 2002 and Arlington, Virginia in January 2003, or have been developed from ideas presented there. The topics include transport and social exclusion in Europe and the US, time-geographic perspectives on accessibility and quality of life, and implementing walking and cycling policies.
