The "uneven development" pattern of growth and change in Southeast Asia has resulted in massive environmental degradation in urban areas. Daniere (U. of Toronto, Canada) and Takahashi (U. of California at Los Angeles, US) argue that the city of Bangkok is a representative example of this process in much of the developing world and, after exploring general economic and environmental management conditions in Southeast Asia, discuss the specifics of the interrelationships between environmental management, community participation, and state structures in the Thai metropolis.
