Summarizes the results of experiments on the mechanical behavior of rock conducted over the last 40 years in the Laboratory for the Physics of Rocks at High Pressures in St. Petersburg. The primary work of the laboratory is to solve severe problems encountered by the Russian mining industry. This report describes pre-failure and post-failure strength and deformation properties of rocks under different stress states and loading paths, time-dependent properties of rocks, the effect of deformation rate on the post-peak strength properties of rock and energy balance during dynamic uncontrolled fracture, and the mechanics of deformation and fracture of saturated rocks.
