This book is a compendium of scholarship concerning the lives, works, and receptions of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Fanny Hensel. Organized thematically, the essays represent the latest work of leading specialists from the USA, France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy.
The book tackles several areas of study which have grown in significance over the last 20 years. The first group of essays explores sources and source problems in Felix Mendelssohn's output, focusing on the disposition of missing and lost works; issues of musical identity: and editorial problems posed by the organ preludes op. 37. Other essays focus on problematic repertoires - Felix's occasional works, song cycles, and opera plans; while another group probes various aspects of the complicated relationships between Felix and Fanny. The volume closes with a group of essays focusing on Felix's reception history - including gender and race in biographical studies, and his influence as composer of organ music and string quarters.
This volume also contains studies of individual works, including Felix's first composition, the Scottish and Reformation symphonies, and Die erste Walpurgisnacht.
