Between the Civil War and World War I, the Maine coast drew thousands of summer visitors ever year. By the 1880s, some of the more affluent visitors decided to build their own cottages. From 1885 to 1905, Scientific American Building Monthly published floor plans, photographs, and descriptions of hun?dreds of homes, to inspire architects, builders, and clients. Fifty of those featured homes were in Maine, and historian Earle Shettleworth and architect Christopher Glass have tracked them down to share them with a contemporary audience.
作者簡介
Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., is the Maine State Historian. He became interested in historic preservation at the age of 13, when Union Station in Portland, Maine, was torn down to make way for a strip mall. He holds degrees from Colby College and Boston University. Christopher Glass is an architectural historian and architect. He is the former chairman of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and taught Architectural Design at Bowdoin College. He lives in Camden, Maine. Scott Hansen, an architectural historian with Sutherland Conservation & Consulting in Augusta, Maine, has researched and written numerous National Register nominations and Maine Historic Building Record documentation projects in addition to consulting on historic tax credit rehabilitation projects. He is the author of one previous book and co-author with Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., of The Architecture of Cushing's Island (2012). David Clough is a lifelong lover of photography with a special passion for photographing structures of historical significance. His work has been published in Japan and the U.S. He lives in Rockland, and this is his first book.
