The Environmental Case ─ Translating Values into Policy

This text consists of 16 cases illustrating how environmental policies evolve in the US, considered from the perspective of political science and addressing the importance of values, ideas, and information in policy making. The cases relate to the regulation of polluters, including the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water acts, toxic waste dumping at Love Canal, the Chesapeake Bay restoration, and acid rain and the Clear Air Act; natural resource management, with cases on drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, federal grazing policy, saving the northern spotted owl, snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park, and extracting resources from the ocean; and climate change, the Cape Wind wind farm, and urban sustainability in Portland, Oregon, and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. This edition has updated and revised cases, two new cases on the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the campaign to regulate fracking, and a new conclusion on gradual policy change.
