Race and Racism in Modern East Asia ─ Western and Eastern Constructions

This collection of essays inaugurates a new series by Brill (Modern East Asia in a Global Perspective) by juxtaposing Western and East Asian views of race and actual racism. After an editorial introduction, the twenty chapter-length essays are organized into two sections along these lines. Chapters on western race theories, racial images, and racism examine early modern race theories, the origins of "the mongoloid race," racial fear since 1800, representations of East Asians in Russian Modernism, national identity in post-revolutionary Russia, and more. The second section on East Asian race theories, racial policies, and racism explores racial discourse and utopian visions in 19th century China, South Korean racism, colonial experience in Korea, Japanese experiences of race abroad between 1880 and 1950, race and Japanese colonialism, blood ideology, and Obamamania in Japan. Rotem Kowner , Professor of Japanese history and culture at the University of Haifa, Israel. His research has focused on the social and racial nexus between Japan and the West since the sixteenth century as well as on wartime behavior and attitudes in modern Japan. Walter Demel , Professor of early modern history at the University of the Armed Forces Munich, Germany. He has mainly published on the Bavarian and German politics of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, on the history of the European nobility, and on the relations between Europe and East Asia, particularly the perceptions of China and Japan.
