This five-volume reference for students of literature will be useful for researching character development and analyzing works of literature. All five volumes contain alphabetical entries on 3,500 works of literature and about 29,000 characters found in these works. Coverage encompasses fiction (both shorter and longer), drama, and poetry. While mostly entries are on works written in the 20th century, there are plenty of entries on earlier works, going back to ancient Greece. Entries give basic info on title, author’s name, date of first publication or production, genre, location and time period of the action in the work, and plot type. Each character profile is discussed in terms of motivation, strengths and flaws, and relationships between characters. Volume 5 contains title, character, and author indexes.
