This guidebook for a self-guided school improvement audit will be useful for schools in danger of failing as well as moderately successful schools. Based on rubrics found in The Kids Left Behind, by Robert D. Barr and William H. Parrett, the practical protocol allows schools and districts to assess personnel, student demographics, and achievement, finances, and professional development. The book's step-by-step explanation of the audit process is combined with practice exercises designed to facilitate consensus-building, dialogue, trust, collaboration, and student achievement. Part I presents the research background to the protocol and sample training exercises. Part II contains sections for each of the nine rubrics of the school improvement audit, with examples of sample documents at each step. Three appendices provide reproducible forms and tables for performing the audit. Barr is affiliated with the Boise State University Center for School Improvement.
