Nawotka analyzes all kinds of documents that came into being in the ancient Greek city Miletus in the Near East and its colonies around the Black Sea in correlation with the council and assembly. By this, he renders a comprehensive picture of the legislative activities of these poleis from the early fifth century BC to the middle third century AD. Not all categories of documents are attested uniformly from the classical to the imperial epoch, he says, but he feels safe in assuming that the Milesians and citizens of other poleis carried on legislative activity throughout the period without major interruptions.
