De Angelis (Free U. of Bolzano, Italy) provides an overview of recent research on the acquisition of languages that considers learners beyond those who speak two languages, within four areas: crosslinguistic influence, multilingual speech production models, the multilingual lexicon, and the impact of bi/multilingualism on cognitive development. She argues that research on multilingual behavior can provide insight about the process of non-native language acquisition and speech production as a whole and discusses each of these areas in turn. In conclusion, she posits whether multilinguals should be considered learners and speakers in their own right and how proficient non-native learners need to be before they can be considered multilingual learners.
