The first version of Klimes' study was his 2012 doctoral dissertation at Charles University in Prague, and drew heavily on his fieldwork in China and modern Xinjiang between 2004 and 2011. He explores how Uyghur intellectuals perceived their nation and national interest during the first half of the 20th century, and in doing so investigates the idea of nation in the context of 21st-century globalization. He covers proto-national identity and interest around 1900, the emergence of the national idea and national agitation during the 1910s and 1920s, the politicization of national discourse during the 1930s, and the significance of a national boundary in flux during the 1930s and 1940s.
