Shalem (history of Islamic art, Munich U., Germany) has done an admirable job of assembling a vast quantity of material on the many so-called tenure horns, or oliphants, that survive from the Middle Ages. The carved elephant tusks, which were produced in Fatimid Egypt in the 11th century, Southern Italy, and Europe, were highly valued works kept in churches and court settings. Shalem describes in detail the history of ivory trade and carving, the medieval sources documenting both, the process of creating the carvings, and the use of the oliphants in Christian settings. 作者簡介
Avinoam Shalem, Ph.D. (1995), History of Art, University of Edinburgh, is Professor of Islamic Art at Munich University. He has published extensively on Islamic ‘minor arts’ includingIslam Christianized (Peter Lang, 1998).
