The Old French William of Tyre

Archbishop William of Tyre's history of the Kingdom of Jerusalem has long been a primary source for the history of the crusades, but Handyside argues that the Latin original was not widely circulated, and that the Old French translation was the one that most people in medieval Europe had access to. He compares the two editions from such perspectives as the first person, classical and biblical allusions, ecclesiastical material, the background to French crusaders and France, the translator as pilgrim, views on the military orders, and dating the translation.
