From Here to Maternity ─ Pregnancy and Motherhood on the Autism Spectrum

The author uses her own experiences as a mother and woman with autism to discuss the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth for women on the spectrum. The text begins with a chapter defining and discussing autism in females. The bulk of the slim text is comprised of the personal history of the author, her journey through motherhood, and her eventual autism diagnosis, before her last pregnancy. The text concludes with several appendices, offering tips and advice for those on the spectrum facing challenges such as morning sickness, breast changes, and exhaustion. Lana Grant is currently researching a BPhil on gender differences in autism at Birmingham University. She has six children and was diagnosed with autism at the age of 38, after the birth of her fifth child. The diagnosis transformed her experience of her sixth pregnancy. Lana is employed by the Birmingham City Council Local Authority Communication Autism Team and is an active advocate for autism, regularly giving talks and writing articles.
