This collection of 40 essays serves as an introduction to the study of world literature and is designed to as a foundation for further study using Salem Press's Critical Insights. Among the novels examined, the oldest is Defoe's Moll Flanders (1722) and about a dozen are nineteenth and early twentieth century classics such as Gogol's The Overcoat, Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. Most of the selections, however, have been written since the middle of the last century. These include two by Trinidadian-born Nobel Prize winner V.S. Naipaul and two from the Australian Peter Carey, one each by the Nigerian Chinua Achebe and India's Anjana Appachana, and two in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Each 8 to 10 page essay keeps to the same plan: a synopsis of the plot is followed by a discussion of the story's historical, societal, religious, scientific and technological contexts, and the biographical context of the author. Each offers questions for classroom discussion, ideas for further research and a list of works cited. Annotation c2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
