The author emphasizes the importance of place in older peoples lives and care and outlines the various residential options and care settings available to them, as well as the role of family assistance, private sector initiatives, and government programs; the potential of smart home technologies and innovative housing, planning, and preventive health and long-term care solutions; and emotional issues and coping solutions. He offers an emotion-based theoretical model to assess whether older people feel like their residential arrangements are satisfying their needs and goals, then addresses psychological, social, economic, and political influences on their current residences; problems with residential inertia behaviors; the role of family caregiving; and residential options for active living, independent living, assisted living, board and care, continuing care, and community, neighborhood, and clustered housing.
