Holacracy is a new method for governing companies. It distributes authority and decision-making throughout an organization, and defines people not by hierarchy and titles, but by roles.
Traditional companies run by "predict and control." That is, management comes up with a strategy based on historical data, theories, and guesswork. The emphasis is on heroic and visionary leaders and loyal workers. And when information from the field contradicts the strategy, the people reporting that information are usually told to get with the program or find another place to work.
Not with Holacracy. When you distribute authority, all reports from the front lines are brought to the people who need to hear them, and there's a process for working out tensions that allows organizations to evolve in real time, responding to changing markets and changing conditions. There's plenty of management – but no managers. Everyone has multiple roles and owns those roles. Holacracy creates organizations that are fast, agile, and succeed by pursuing their purpose, not following a dated and artificial plan.

Brian J. Robertson created Holacracy and founded HolacracyOne, the organization that is training people and companies all over the world in this new system. Robertson had previously launched a successful software company, where he first introduced the principles that would become Holacracy, making him not just a management theorist, but someone who has successfully implemented a holacracy-powered organization. He lives in Philadelphia.
