Civic Capitalism

The authors of the 11 essays in this volume outline an alternative to capitalism that is more sustainable socially, economically, and environmentally. They argue that the current model's limitations were revealed by the 2008 economic crisis and detail a new model of civic capitalism that relies on governance of the market by the state and in the name of the people to deliver collective public goods, equity, and social justice, with a focus on moral purpose. The model puts markets at the service of the public as citizens, has a more interventionist role for the state and a sense of civic duty, has a coordinated re-regulation of markets and risk management as a collective public good and an antidote to unstable growth, is sustainable and engages with alternative models of energy use and resource conservation, promotes sustainable development built on investment rather than debt-fueled consumption, develops an alternative currency of economic success, integrates a social dimension that has different and more civic social policies and partnerships, has a commitment to reducing inequality between countries and peoples, and creates mechanisms of global governance that serve the global economy. Colin Hay is Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po, Paris, and Affiliate Professor of Political Analysis and Co-Director of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) at the University of Sheffield. He is the author of many books including The Failure of Anglo-Liberal Capitalism, The Political Economy of European Welfare Capitalism (with David Wincott) and Why We Hate Politics.

Anthony Payne is Professor of Politics and Co-Director of SPERI at the University of Sheffield. He is the author of a number of books including The Global Politics of Unequal Development and Development (with Nicola Phillips).
