Looking at the writing of women from North and South America and different ethnic groups in the US, Allen (English, Southeastern Oklahoma State U.) finds a consistent motif of insect and seed metamorphosis, and its growing use as women become aware of the existence of a feminine self that is not acknowledged in language. She finds it an attempt to reject the casting of women's experience in the archetypal images of Persephone and Penelope, the traditional roles assigned to the feminine in the west. Annotation c.
