The author examines the status of women in the ancient cultures that form the foundation for the early church and the New Testament-- Mesopotamia, Egypt, Judaism, Greece, Rome, and mystery cults in the ancient Mediterranean world--and how these cultures influenced the writers of the New Testament. She discusses the gender distinction between woman and man and how male dominance and female subordination as social paradigms became part of the Christian tradition. She contends that patriarchy in Judaism and Christianity was assimilated into biblical doctrine from more ancient cultures, that New Testament writers lived within social structures that were in place long before their time and that the texts reflect those traditions, that New Testament texts about women were written to advise Christians about how to live within their current social systems, and that the social traditions that subordinated women have been perpetuated by misapplication.
