Noonan explores the eclectic films of the 1960s and 1970s to determine what they reveal about the development of the science fiction film genre, but also about changes involving gender. She includes relevant episodes of The Outer Limits television series, which aired from 1963 to 1965 and refers to other series as well. Her topics are trajectories of post-1950s science fiction films, the spectacular science fictional year 1968, representations of gender in films of what she called the Middle period such as The Andromeda Strains and The Stepford Wives, films she excluded from her main study and why she did so, and the cosmic shift in the genre that ended the period she studies and produced such films as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Alien.
