Pragmatic Counseling and Psychotherapy integrates concepts of positive psychology and strengths based therapy into existential therapy. This turns existential therapy on its head as it approaches the theory from a positive, rather than the traditional deficit model. The author's aim is to make existential therapy, positive and easily accessible to a wide audience through a pragmatic, stage wise model. He expands on the work of Viktor Frankel and focuses on delivery to individuals and groups, men and women, and evidence based therapy. The key to his work is to help the client focus on resistance and to push through it as a means of achieving a break through.
The book begins with a description of the author's experience as an existential therapist and then moves to merging philosophy and psychotherapy. It then presents the essential concepts and theory of existential therapy. It then moves on to the concept of resistance followed by the developmental processes of psychotherapy. Finally the book moves into working with special populations such as groups, individuals and particularly baby boomers.
