Linguists translate six selected chapters of Paul's groundbreaking Prinzipien der Sprachgeschichte--first edition in 1880 and fifth in 1920--and comment on his contribution to number of areas in linguistics. His references for those chapters are also included. The translations cover the introduction, on the general nature of language development, phonetic change, analogy, basic syntactic relationships, and syntactic rebracketing. The reflections cover Paul as a usage-based grammarian, the conceptions of analogical innovation/change, his emergent grammar, and his theory of sound change.
